SandPalms Roadhouse and Tavern and the all new SandPalms Tropical Motel |
Fishing in and around DundeeBynoe Harbour has everything for the fisherman from small muddy creeks and gutters to larger arms, in-shore and off-shore reefs. The muddy creeks and gutters usually produce a wide variety of fish and crustaceans ranging from the famous Barramundi, Salmon, Mangrove Jack, Bream, Mullet, Prawns, Mudrabs, and more. The rocky oyster covered creeks hold a range of fish including Snapper, Mangrove Jack, Ock-Ock, Bream, Cod, and an abundance of Cat-Fish. In the larger arms is bluer water where Skinny, Trevally, Salmon and Barra can be picked up by trawling. The in-shore and off-shore reefs are great places for larger specimens of the well sought after Golden Snapper, Mangrove Jacks, Coral Trout, Jewfish, Mackerel, Tuna, Trevally, Skinny, Tricky Snapper, Groper, the odd Red Emperor and Shark (common Sharks found are Tigers and Mako) which put up a magnificent fight. The mouth of the Finniss River is saltwater, access can be via the Dundee boat ramp, a beach launch at Stingray Heads or continue along Five Mile Beach to the mouth of the Finniss and launch your boat at the mouth or at the Professional Fisherman's Camp approx 2 km upstream. Locals regularly fish on shore off the sandbank at the mouth. Fishing in the saltwater Finniss includes all the major fish varieties such as Barra, Salmon and Jewfish which are the main target species. Five Mile Beach is an excellent place to fish for Salmon, Barra and Triple Tail. Popeye mullet, Prawns and other live bait can be found in abundance along this stretch of beach. About 15 km upstream is where the transition from saltwater to freshwater starts. The best access to the freshwater is from the Hard Castle boat ramp which only a couple of kilometers from Sand Palms Roadhouse and Tavern. But this does not give you access to the saltwater or the mouth of the Finniss due to rock bars. The freshwater Finniss hold varieties such as Barramundi, Seratoga, Yabbies, Cherabin and extremely large Catfish. The freshwater is more ideal for trawling and casting lures.
